I have arrived in sunny California! San Diego to be exact. Here is a picture of the beach: I had some fun swimming in the ocean a bit. Do you know which ocean this is? I also love palm trees. They remind me of one of my dinosaur friends from back in the day. Do you know which kind of dinosaur I am thinking of? I also visited a very famous place in San Diego- The San Diego Zoo! There is a great website that allows you to virtually visit the zoo if you can't visit in person. Here is the link: http://kids.sandiegozoo.org/ Have fun visiting and learn some new things! Let me know in the comments below what you find out!

Hi everyone!
Sorry for not posting in a while. I was really enjoying my time in NYC! I went to so many museums and concerts, and I ate some delicious food. I decided I'm going to start heading west. I just got on a Greyhound bus and will update my blog as soon as I get somewhere! It might take a little while, buses are not as quick as airplanes. Talk to you all soon! Learning about Ella and jazz music was a lot of fun. It also made me wonder about what other kinds of music I could discover in NYC. As I was exploring the city, I came across a very important place. This place is called Carnegie Hall. It is a very prestigious concert venue. Ella once performed here! As you can see from this picture, people were setting up for a classical concert.
Classical music -- do you know anything about this style? From what I could hear, it sounded different from Ella's jazz music. I found a great website to learn about classical music. Click on this link: Classical Music for Kids Website Music is a big part of New York City. There are so many places to hear live music. I went to a place called the Jazz Standard, where they had a program for kids. There, some kids got to play on stage in an orchestra, and were playing music by famous jazz musicians such as Charlie Parker, George Gershwin and Miles Davis. There was one song I heard that I especially loved. I asked someone what it was called, and they said it was a song called "April in Paris." A very famous singer named Ella Fitzgerald performed this song. She would perform at a very famous place called The Cotton Club in the neighborhood of Harlem in New York City. Here is what it looked like a long time ago: I want to learn more about Ella Fitzgerald. I know she was famous for her "scat" singing. Do you know if there is a biography of her in the Braeside library? Let me know what you learn! After my visit to D.C., I wanted to go and visit another very famous city: New York City. On Friday, I hopped on an Amtrak train and took it to New York. The first thing I wanted to see was the Statue of Liberty. Here is a picture I took: The Statue of Liberty is one of the most famous monument in the world. Do you know what it represents? I would like to research more about the Statue of Liberty. I will definitely stop by the library to check out a book! On Saturday I had big plans to visit another great NYC attraction: The Museum of Modern Art. As everyone knows, I love art! (Especially Henri Matisse!) I was excited to go, but then this happened: There was a huge snowstorm! There was no way I could get to the museum now.
Since I couldn't actually go to the museum, I thought about what I should do instead. Then, the idea hit me: I decided to take a virtual trip to an art museum! I emailed Ms. Parker to find out if there was a good art museum website for kids. She said yes, there is a great website that is especially for kids! It is like visiting the actual museum, where you can look at art and learn new things, except it is online. She let me know the website address: http://www.moma.org/interactives/destination/# I hope you have fun "visiting" the museum! As always, leave me a comment about something you learned about! (But make sure you get permission from an adult first, and protect your identity!) After visiting Springfield and learning about Abraham Lincoln, I wanted to go and see the Lincoln Memorial I had heard so much about. I took a taxi to O'Hare airport and got on an airplane that took me to Washington D.C., which is the capital of the United States. There is so much history to learn about in this city! I arrived at night, and went right away to see the Lincoln Memorial. You can get an idea of how big the statue of Lincoln is. You also can imagine how big the statue is in relation to ME, since I am a very small dinosaur! After seeing the Lincoln Memorial, I went to see some other important memorials, since there are so many in D.C. The most popular memorial of the day was the statue of Martin Luther King, Jr. That wasn't a surprise since today is the day we celebrate MLK's birthday! There is so much to learn about this important person. It's a good thing I never get tired of learning! I need to stop in the library around here and do some research. What do you know about Martin Luther King, Jr.? Please share in the comments section!
I had a great time in the city of Chicago. I decided it would be a good idea to travel south of Chicago, to learn some history about the state. So, I got on a bus and found myself in the state capital. Do you know what the state capital of Illinois is? If you guessed Springfield, you are right! Here is a picture I took of the Capitol building. As you can see, it was a little snowy this weekend. There is another famous building in Springfield. I'll give you some clues: it was the home of one of our most famous and popular presidents. He was a lawyer. He was tall, had a beard, and wore a top hat. Did you guess it was Abraham Lincoln? You're right! Here is a picture of his home.
Now that I think about it, Abraham Lincoln was a really interesting man. He did some really great things. I want to learn more about him, so I think I should do some research. Let me know in the comments section if you have any information to share! I was so excited to visit Chicago over winter break. I had heard so many great things about the city. The place I couldn't wait to visit was the Art Institute of Chicago. My favorite painting was one by an artist named Henri Matisse. He is my favorite artist. I also went shopping on Michigan Avenue. There were so many people in the stores! I bought myself a little scarf, since the weather is getting colder. One of the most exciting things I saw was the huge lion statues outside the museum. I was a little scared at first, but then I saw they were not real lions. This was a huge relief. What did you see over winter break? |
